This paper explores the “Picitup” South Coast program and the success of the program in providing the tools and support for volunteers to pick up litter on their daily walk and become citizen scientists and assist the South Coast region with determining where litter is coming from.

Abstract

Biography

James Vincent. A former NSW police office and Wollongong City Council Ranger started at the Illawarra Joint Organisation over 3 years ago as the Regional Illegal Dumping Prevention Coordinator. James manages the Southern region illegal dumping program which spans across 7 Councils in the southern region of NSW. The program identifies issues across the southern region, where benefits of scale, reduced costs, increased efficiencies and specialist skills can be more appropriately applied for improved monitoring, education and enforcement towards illegal dumping.
