How to roll-out a compulsory FOGO service (spoiler alert– it isn’t easy!)  

Gwen is a Senior Waste and Environmental Consultant with a real passion for consumer behaviour change projects that focus on waste education and waste reduction. With a background in marketing research and a 20+ year career in advertising and marketing, she has delivered grants and projects that generated real behaviour change.  As the recycling coordinator for a Texas school district (74 schools, 67k students) she ran an award-winning paper recycling grant; co-mingled recycling and canteen waste reduction programs; plus written and delivered school programs and adult training workshops that helped audiences develop better understanding and commitment to waste management. Gwen project-managed the rollout of a compulsory FOGO bin (20k properties, 46k residents) which won a 2020 Local Government Award for Environmental Leadership and Sustainability; and has audited and assessed multiple municipal and retail waste streams for composition and comparison.   


Wendy Grant, Project Officer, MidWaste Regional Waste Group

LUNCHBOX LEFTOVERS an innovative project to reduce school food waste

Wendy is a Project Manager with the MidWaste Regional Waste Forum and has a passion for community education projects that strengthen community capacity for environmental sustainability. She has a background in natural resource management, vocational education and waste. Her experience includes delivering community based education projects for Landcare, TAFE, State and Local Government including waste education and behaviour change programs with local Aboriginal communities, businesses, schools, early childhood educators, TAFE students and regional communities. 

She is currently managing a two year Love Food Communities grant, funded by the EPA, educating mid north coast communities and businesses on all things Love Food Hate Waste. Under this program and in partnership with BehaviourWorks Australia, Wendy implemented a food waste reduction pilot program testing interventions within local schools measuring behaviour change and food waste reduction outcomes achieving positive results.   


Cara Watters, Environmental Consultant, MRA Consulting Group & Dr Talebul Islam, Coordinator Strategic Waste, Randwick City Council

Randwick City Council goes FOGO

Cara has a strong understanding of community engagement and education in the waste sector. Her previous experience includes Albury City’s Halve Waste waste minimisation community engagement initiative and Randwick City Council’s FOGO implementation. Cara has conducted FOGO feasibility studies, offtake market analyses and developed implementation plans across Australia.Cara brings previous experience as a waste and sustainability consultant in London, where she assisted councils address waste issues, including contamination and food waste recycling. 

Dr Talebul Islam completed a PhD and post-doctoral research before moving to waste management in local government in Australia and New Zealand. With 25 years’ experience, Talebul has managed landfills, remediated closed landfills and contaminated sites and developed and implemented waste and recycling collection and processing contracts. He has also participated in state and commonwealth legislative and strategy reviews on waste management and developed waste management strategies and policies for local government.

Gayle Sloan, CEO, Waste Management & Resource Recovery Association of Australia

Gayle has a law and arts degree from the University of Adelaide. She worked for the NSW Attorney General’s Department for a number of years before moving into the Attorney General’s Ministerial Office in 1998, and then the NSW Police Minister’s Office in 2000.

Following this time in state government, Gayle worked as a Director in a number of NSW councils, primarily looking after service delivery and assets. She developed and delivered a number of waste management contracts on behalf of councils, as well as managed environment and regulatory departments, including rangers and compliance officers.  

After three years of being a stay-at-home mum, Gayle returned to work in 2012 at Visy Recycling. In November 2015, Gayle joined WMRR as Chief Executive Officer.
